What if my child does not practice?
You will find tons of helpful advice on this topic throughout the book. Resistance of some kind is typical, but offering encouragement, being consistent , and finding creative ways to allow your child to follow through with the program are the best solutions. Without practice, the brain’s neural networks will not improve and the child’s difficulties will not disappear or change on their own. Keep in mind the techniques themselves are simple and straightforward, and the practice should be seen in the same way. Each practice session takes about five to ten minutes.

How might my child respond to the training?
Responses to training vary. Many children enjoy mastering new skills; other children may resist particular exercises knowing the activity is difficult. Occasionally the child may even be bored by the repetition of the exercises. As the child improves his neural networks the more he practices, he will become better able to handle the tasks involved in training.

How long does it take to see results?
Results can occur within the first week and are incremental throughout the training program. Sometimes you can pinpoint changes day-to-day or weekly. Other times, a trainee may feel a sudden improvement that is like a breakthrough one or two months into the training. Changes can be of four kinds: physical (e.g., improved coordination or better sensory modulation), emotional (e.g., improved self-esteem), cognitive (e.g., faster intake and processing), or behavioral (e.g., improved self-regulation and management).

What are some of the changes one can expect to see at first?
Although there are “trademark” developments that most people who practice can expect to achieve, each person’s rate of progress and improvements are different.
Oftentimes the child displays more assertiveness at first. This is an important step in his development because it can lead to improved self-esteem. It also paves the way for more effective self-regulation and less tension and crisis within the home and school environments. When the child begins to improve his physical coordination and acquires skills such as faster, easier reading or less need for meltdowns or attention-seeking behavior, his new confidence results in increased self-esteem and oftentimes a better self-image.

Does my child need to keep training once the program ends?
To ensure that the neural networks have had an opportunity to mature, it is recommended that the trainee practice all exercises for a period of three weeks at the highest level of mastery.
Thereafter, the skills mastered in training are comparable to learning to ride a bike. Once the skills are in place, there is no need to continue practicing. The only exception is with the eye exercises. It is recommended to practice these exercises once a week after the training program ends so the eyes remain functioning at their optimum level.

Does my child need to discontinue his medication to participate in the program?
The majority of children who take medication for their learning or behavioral difficulty succeed in reducing or discontinuing their medication by the close of the program. This conversation is always overseen by you and your child’s doctor. Your child does not need to discontinue his medication in order to participate in the program.
